In a historic moment for India, opening batter Abhishek Sharma is ranked the number one batter in the latest ICC Rankings for batters in T20Is. The southpaw, who is in scintillating form in T20Is in 2025, achieved this feat on account of scoring a phenomenal hundred against England in a T20I earlier this year.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batter scored India's second-fastest T20I hundred off just 37 balls and destroyed England's bowling attack. Ever since that knock, the Men in Blue have played limited T20Is, thus enabling Abhishek to climb to the number one spot. Since Rohit Sharma's retirement in the shortest format in T20Is in 2024, the SRH batter has made the opening spot his own by scoring runs at a strike rate above 160.

India's next T20I assignment will be the Asia Cup, set to be played on September 9 in the UAE. Abhishek is most likely set to open the side, owing to his rich vein of form. Not only can the opener bat freely in power play, but he can also bat long and kill the game during long run chases.
