Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pummelled Gujarat Titans (GT) by 83 runs in the 67th match of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Opting to bat first, CSK took advantage of the relatively easier batting conditions. Openers Ayush Mhatre (34 runs off 17 balls) and Devon Conway (52 runs off 35 balls) batted brilliantly at the top. Dewald Brevis (57 runs off 23 balls) finished off well, helping CSK post 230 runs, their highest total of IPL 2025.
Gujarat Titans, chasing the gargantuan target, were never in the game after they lost Shubman Gill (13 runs off 9 balls) and Jos Buttler (5 runs off 7 balls) early. CSK continued to chip in with wickets. GT could only reach 147 runs, losing by 83 runs.
Dewald Brevis Bats Gujarat Titans Out of the GameÂ
CSK started off brilliantly with Mhatre smashing 28 runs off the second over bowled by Arshad Khan. After Mhatre’s dismissal in the fourth over, Urvil Patel (37 runs off 19 balls) adopted the role of an aggressor, while Conway held onto one end.
Conway departed after scoring a 35-ball 52. Shivam Dube (17 runs off 8 balls) came out to bat at No. 4 and made an important contribution.
While Jadeja (21* runs off 18 balls) struggled throughout his stay at the crease, Brevis’ innings ensured CSK ended up with an above-par total of 230 runs for the fall of five wickets.
For GT, Prasidh Krishna bowled well. He picked up two wickets and gave away only 22 runs in his four overs.
Gujarat Titans, who relied mostly on their top-order for the heavy-lifting, were under the pump straight away after Anshul Kamboj and Khaleel Ahmed sent Shubman and Buttler packing early.
Sai Sudharsan (41 runs off 28 balls) did his best but it was never going to be enough in this massive chase.
Everything boiled down to how GT’s middle-order would bat. With doubts surrounding how the Titans would hold up if their top-order fails, it was proved once again that a lot of work still needs to be done going into the playoffs.
Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. It was only a question of when rather than if. Only formalities remained. Arshad Khan (20 runs off 14 balls) struck a few boundaries only for entertainment.Â
The Titans eventually were bowled at 147 runs as CSK signed off with an 83-run win.
CSK Dent GT’s Top-Two Hopes
With this win, CSK did a favour to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS). These teams would only have to win their respective remaining matches to ensure a top-two finish.
As GT lost the match, their chances to play the Qualifier 1 took a massive hit. They now have to hope that RCB lose their next match to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) scheduled on May 27.
